First Case Of Netflix Addiction In India Being Treated In Bangaluru

Addiction is the word that we throw casually around people who are always staring at their screens. But recently, a case of Netflix addiction was admitted in Nimhans Hospital in Bangalore, India. The case will compel you to take note of the typical signs that confirm if someone is Netflix addict. The National Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences has taken the case of a 26 year old patient and treating him for addiction.

Netflix  – An Escapism Route?

A clinic at Bengaluru’s National Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences (Nimhans) is treating its first case of Netflix addiction in a 26-year-old man who initially approached doctors concerned about the time he spent on video games. According to Manoj Kumar Sharma, the head of Nimhans Service for Healthy Use of Technology (SHUT) Clinic stated that the patient has been thinking about his career prospects compared to other who belong to the same age group. The man stated that he has been under lot of pressure from the family to find a new job after a failed business venture. However, after thorough questioning, the doctors reached the conclusion that it is not the video games.
The doctors found out that the man was unemployed and therefore spent more than seven hours on Netflix, binge-watching the shows. This made him feel better as it was the method of escapism that he opted for. Dr. Sharma also stated that watching shows for long hours made him feel better and forget all the problems. Further, the report also added that he would turn on the TV right after waking up in the morning. However, gradually the habit started taking toll causing eye strain, irregular sleeping patterns and fatigue. Now, the doctors are using mix of various therapies, relaxation activities and exercise to treat him.

Netflix addiction is similar to social-media and video-game addiction, issues pointed out by the World Health Organizations recently. It is kind of coping mechanism for those not happy in the offline world. Meanwhile, there could be several signs which would help Netflix users in understanding if they are gradually drifting towards the addiction path. Activities such as refreshing Netflix constantly, watching the same movies and shows over and again, binge watching, cut off from outer world, Eye strain and bodyache and so on are few signs.
